Yuri is from a homebrew world known as the Weave. The gods and factions mentioned in his history are my own creation.

Orphaned at an early age, Yuri was taken in by a temple to Anaphia in the nebulous border area between Palati and Mahosei, close to the Mountains of Maré. A bright boy, Yuri quickly fell into trouble; this trouble was promptly redirected into being a Veiled Mercy, one of Anaphia's priests sent out to help ensure those who should be dead stay dead, either by stabbing them (in the case of those trying to cheat death) or gathering information for the wandering clerics (for the actual undead). Yuri himself tends to follow up on rumors of cults and possible liches, though he'll help any Mercy who needs it and has frequently played the honey trap when seeking to send scumbags to their final rest so one of the others didn't have to.

It should be noted that while the Veiled Mercies will perform contract kills, they are not an assassin's guild and Yuri takes offense if anyone calls him an assassin. They don't kill for money or political gain, nor do they take joy in it. Like their goddess, the Mercies know that death is sacred, that life is all connected, and that to kill another living human is to kill some small part of yourself. They consider this a sacrifice of a sort; they will not kill a living human unless Anaphia herself sends a sign that this is the right and necessary thing to do. (They do, however, generally consider killing human traffickers and that ilk the right thing to do without relying on their goddess's approval, because what the actual fuck.)

Working so closely with death and being a devout follower of Anaphia, Yuri knows just how short and fragile life is and seeks to make the most of it. He's always eager to have fun and cause a little harmless chaos and, in his own words, is "smart enough to know better, but that's hardly any fun". He is the guy who goes "That is a terrible idea. I'm in." and will happily help the troublemaker make more trouble smartly.


It really cannot be overstated how smart Yuri is, despite his usual attitude. He's fluent in seven languages, knows quite a lot about the history of his world and its gods, and is one of the few active Mercies allowed to look into liches as the temples can trust him not to be hurt while sneaking around a wizard's tower because he poked at something he shouldn't have. He doesn't flaunt it or anything, preferring to be seen as the pretty fun-loving man he really is deep down. Just, maybe don't think he's an idiot. Good way to get stabbed.

Another good way to get stabbed is to mistreat the dead or attempt to cheat death, though given his everything else that that goes without saying. Yuri will always, always perform last rites for the dead and will do his best to help those who are grieving work through their grief in whatever he can. Sometimes that means being there to listen; other times that means letting them feel their emotions and work them out alone.

To use DnD terms, Yuri is a rogue of the phantom subclass as well as a cleric of the grave domain. He is also a homebrew moonfolk race, which is basically Viera ala Final Fantasy with some added flavor. This does mean he has rabbit ears and is built a bit more like Viera than a human!
